Celebrating Volunteerism
Honor National Volunteerism Month by helping out in Glendale
The spirit of giving is in the air this month, so why not join the fun. Here are a few great ways you can volunteer in the city. Or, if you’re looking for a less time-intensive commitment, you might want to check out one of the city’s great volunteer events.
Great Giving Gigs
Here are a few ways to donate your time in Glendale.
- Are you of the garden variety? If that’s the case, then you might want to consider signing up to be a docent for the Glendale Xeriscape Botanical Garden. Docents assist with educational programs and tours at the garden, which is located at the Main Library (5959 W. Brown St.). No experience is needed and free training and workshops are available. Call 623-930-3760.
- Bookworms always have a home at Glendale’s libraries. Volunteers comprise an important part of the libraries’ operation and perform a variety of duties, including book processing, circulation work and reference services. For more information, please call the library where you wish to be placed and ask for the volunteer coordinator. (Main: 623-930-3565, Foothills: 623-930-3831, Velma Teague: 623-930-3431)
- Take a hike and watch a trail. Have you heard about Glendale’s Adopt-a-Trail program? You can become actively involved in conserving and maintaining the tremendous natural wealth and beauty of nearly 50 miles of multi-use trails in the city. Volunteers are needed to help improve and maintain the trails. Individuals or groups will receive training on the proper techniques. Adopters will be asked to keep the trail maintained and litter-free at least twice a year. If your organization is interested, please call 623-930-2042.
