Nominate now for the 2006 Ruth Byrne Historic Preservation Award

Buildings, neighborhoods, monuments, streets—as these vital elements of our city age, they become important symbols of our roots, and preserving them are a handful of dedicated citizens. Glendale wants to recognize these individuals for their historic preservation work and ongoing efforts with the annual Ruth Byrne Historic Preservation Award.

Glendale’s Historic Preservation Commission is requesting nominations for the 10th annual Ruth Byrne Historic Preservation Award. Named after Ruth Byrne, who was the recipient of the 2002 award, this recognition honors outstanding contributions by individuals or organizations for historic preservation activities in the city. Byrne is past president of the Glendale Historical Society and a past member of the Historic Preservation Commission.

Nominations are due March 3, and forms are available at:

  • Glendale Main Library; 59th Avenue and Brown Street
  • Velma Teague Library; 58th Avenue and Glendale Avenue
  • Foothills Library at 57th Avenue and Union Hills Road
  • Reception desk on the second floor in the Glendale City Hall Administration building at 5850 West Glendale Avenue or contacting Ron Short at (623) 930-2592

The Historic Preservation Commission will evaluate the nominations and make the selection of the recipient at a commission meeting to be held on March 23. The award will be presented at a Glendale City Council Meeting on May 9.

  • Richard Coffinger, 1996, preserving the First National Bank Building
  • Mayor Elaine Scruggs, 1997, leadership in preserving the Manistee Ranch Main House and palm grove
  • Martha Campbell, 1998, preserving the 1895 Messenger house
  • Glendale Historic Society, 1999, for years of dedicated preservation work
  • Sue Branch, 1999, for revitalizing historic Catlin Court
  • Charles and Carol St. Claire, 2000, significant contribution to historic preservation. Ms. St. Claire is President of the Glendale Historical Society
  • Sandy Kralovetz, 2001, for preservation of the 1917 Christian Church Bungalow
  • Larry Rovey, 2001, for his long-standing support of the Sahuaro Ranch Foundation and preservation of Glendale's agricultural heritage
  • Ruth Byrne, 2002, for her active leadership in historic preservation
  • Charles F. "Charlie" Sands and Louis "Buzzard" Sands, IV, 2003, for their preservation and restoration of Manistee Ranch
  • Juanita Buckley, 2004, for the preservation of the 1919 bungalow at 5408 West Myrtle Avenue and creating a museum and annual music festival to honor the memory of Glendale's native son Marty Robbins
  • Lori Green, 2005, for preservation of Catlin Court Historic District
  • Dan Kallberg, 2005, for preservation of the Glendale Police Department through the Glendale Police Museum
