Mayor Elaine Scruggs Elected New President of League of Arizona Cities and Towns

Glendale Mayor Elaine M. Scruggs assumed the presidency of the League of Arizona Cities and Towns in June 2002. Mayor Scruggs was officially elected last at a meeting of the League’s Executive Committee.

"At this challenging time in the state of Arizona, we must increase our efforts at the local level to create a greater awareness among our citizens and state policymakers about the importance of strong cities and towns," said Mayor Scruggs. "Then as municipal leaders we must work together for the benefit of our individual communities, and all municipalities across the State."

As President of an association, which represents Arizona’s 87 incorporated cities and towns, Mayor Scruggs will help to guide the League in its mission of legislative advocacy, education and training, technical assistance and information sharing to benefit local government efforts in Arizona. In addition, she will direct the League’s Strong Cities Make a Strong State program that aims to inform citizens about the value of city services and their relation to quality of life in Arizona.

"We are honored and proud to have Mayor Scruggs lead our organization," says Catherine F. Connolly, Executive Director of the League. "Her tenacity, dedication and extensive leadership experience will be a great benefit to our association and the citizens of Arizona."

The League of Arizona Cities and Towns, formed in 1937, is a voluntary, nonpartisan, non-profit association comprised of the 87 incorporated cities and towns in the state. The League serves its member cities and towns through providing legislative advocacy, technical assistance, conferences and training, and information sharing services.
