Exceptional Evening Family Programming at Glendale Libraries

GLENDALE, Ariz. – It is no secret that the family budget is getting stretched to the limit. Glendale Public Library has family fun that is both free and educational. The following evening activities are happening in March and April at the city’s three libraries.

Creatures of the Night
Tuesday, March 17, 7 p.m., Main Library Auditorium
We know about owls and bats, but what else is out there after dark? Find out when the Wildlife World Zoo visits the Glendale Public Library. this special presentation of nocturnal information is open to the whole family.

Creepy Crawly Zoo
Monday, March 23, 7-8 p.m., Foothills Branch Roadrunner Room
Hissing cockroaches, predatory beetles, giant millipedes...creep yourself out and learn why a stink bug stinks or how the assassin bug got its name. Is it a tree branch or walking stick? Find out what else lurks in your own backyard. Entomologists galore are invited to this event for ages 5 and up. Two-person family teams can travel from table to table after the presentation to hold a millipede, a walking stick or other critter. No registration required.

Book Works "Tortoise and the Jackrabbit"
Monday, March 23, 7 p.m., City Council Chambers
The YOUTH WORKS performance troupe of the Theater Works Youth Programs will be composed of young people ages 8 to 16. Director/Writer Jim Gradillas will present "Tortoise and the Jackrabbit" by Susan Lowell. The play will have audience participants who could be part of the play experience as it happens.

Art of Silkscreen Printing
Tuesday, April 15, 7:15 - 8:45 p.m.. Foothills Branch Library Roadrunner Room
Silkscreen printing originated in China about 3000 years ago. Red Rohall teaches the basic methods of this process; two-person teams then design and print one t-shirt. Finished prints are one-of-a-kind and very colorful. Two-person family teams (parent/child, grandparent/child, teen/younger sibling, etc.) are invited. Registration is required, begins March 31. For ages 6-11.

Tales of Adventure!
Monday, April 20, 7 p.m., Main Library Auditorium
Think you've got what it takes to be a pirate? Are you itching for adventures and excitement? Sail the wide oceans and look for buried treasure with Layne Gneiting. These tales of adventure will keep you on the edge of your seat!

Eileen Morgan Taiko
Monday, April 27, 7 p.m., City Council Chambers
This exciting performance includes the powerful Japanese Taiko drums, beautiful bamboo wind instruments from China and Japan and unusual percussion instruments from Asia.

The programs described above are part of a yearlong project, What E.L.S.E. (Enhancing Life Skills/Experiences) Is Happening @ the Glendale Libraries. It is supported with funds granted by the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records under the Library Services and Technology Act, which is administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
