Volunteer Opportunities at the Main Library

Interested in Volunteering at the Main Library? Download an application here,  (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader) and read below about the different types of volunteers at the Main Library.

iTeens -- iTeens volunteers work at the Youth Department Reference Desk, assisting younger children with computers, managing computer sign-ups and helping to maintain the computers.   iTeens volunteers will receive special training on the library’s Apple computers.

Youth Services Volunteer --  Youth Services volunteers perform a variety of tasks in the Youth Department, including preparing for library events, book and media organization, assisting with craft programs and other events, and other duties as assigned.

Book Buddies --  Book Buddies is a read-aloud program designed for teens and early elementary aged students. Book Buddies will read and select books with their buddies.  To be a Book Buddies volunteer, you must be between the ages of 12-18, and have a desire to work with elementary age children and a willingness to develop cooperative, friendly relationships. Book Buddies must also be willing to commit to volunteering at least 2 hours a week on Wednesday afternoons from June 4th-July 23rd. There is a mandatory training session for Book Buddies volunteers on May 31st @ 3:00 p.m.  To download a Book Buddies application, please click here.

Community Service Saturdays --  Teens who only need a small number of volunteer hours, or who do not wish to commit to an ongoing volunteer program are invited to Community Service Saturdays. Community Service Saturdays are the second Saturday of every month, December-May, and run from 10:00 a.m.— 2:00 p.m.  Teens earn four hours of community service credit for completing tasks in the library, and assisting at a children’s craft program. Registration is required for Community Service Saturdays; please call 623-930-3537.

On Call Volunteers --  Teens who want to help out at the library, but do not want to commit to an ongoing volunteer program may assist as On Call Volunteers.  On Call volunteers assist with special events at the library, such as craft and activity programs.  On-Call volunteers usually work 2-4 hours at a time, as needed.  On call volunteers are notified one week prior to an event; and can decline to assist if they have a prior commitment.

For more information about any of the Main Library's volunteer programs, please call 623-930-3537 or e-mail Merideth at YouthLibrarian@glendaleaz.com.

Volunteer Opportunities at the Foothills Branch Library

Long Term Volunteers
Volunteers assist with numerous library activities: program preparation; book, video and audio organization; and sometimes program participation. Note that some of the tasks can be mundane or repetitive. Some youth programs attract hundreds of children. If you would like an ongoing volunteer experience, submit an application. While we continually take volunteer applications, the best times to apply are in early Fall (August-September), the first of the year(January), and Spring (April-May).  For more information about being a library volunteer, please contact Kristin Fletcher-Spear at 623-930-3840.

Book Buddies
October-November, Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:30 p.m.- 5:30 p.m.
This fall program pairs Teens 12-18 years of age with children in grades K-3 for a reading experience. These one-to-one reading sessions not only boost the children's literacy but also their self esteem. The young children look up to the Teens and relish their attention. The program runs in October and November. If this sounds like something you would enjoy, call the library in August or September to get on the list. There is a mandatory training session related to reading, library use, and child development. For more information please contact Kristin at 623-930-3840.
