Volunteer Opportunities - "Glendale Star Volunteer" 

The City of Glendale encourages involvement in government  through volunteerism.  Many department services are enhanced because of the generosity of time given by citizens of Glendale and citizens of surrounding areas.  Volunteers enable the City to stretch tax dollars and improve the community in many ways.  

Volunteers serve in many departments of the City including Police, Fire, Library, Recreation, Parks, City Court, Human Resources, Engineering, Planning, Building Safety and the Warehouse.  As a “Star Volunteer” you will receive on-the-job training by experienced staff members and get a first hand look at how Arizona’s fourth largest city operates.  Click here to download the volunteer brochure.

Volunteer Code Compliance Inspector - Code Compliance

JOB SUMMARY: Performs field and office work to ensure compliance with city codes related to sign and vehicle for sale requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Makes determination of sign and vehicle for sale code violations.
  • Removes illegal signs from traffic control devices, streetlight standards, utility poles, trees or any other device located in city rights-of-way.
  • Discards sign material at assigned disposal areas.
  • Affixes warning stickers onto vehicles marked “For Sale” parked on city rights-of-way, at shopping centers and vacant parcels or property.
  • Contacts responsible party regarding vehicle for sale warnings being issued.
  • Collects pertinent data and takes photographs documenting city code violations related to illegal signs in city rights-of-way and vehicles for sale.
  • Performs follow-up inspections to ensure that remedial action has been taken.
  • Communicates with City of Glendale code compliance inspectors for follow-up action if necessary.
  • Works effectively with responsible party in order to achieve a high level of voluntary compliance.
  • Establishes and maintains effective and harmonious working relationships with citizens.
  • Uses computer database to access information on parcels of vacant land.
  • Occasionally assists office staff with related duties and assignments.

TIME COMMITMENT: 20 – 30 hours per month with a flexible schedule.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to learn the principles, practices, methods and techniques of code compliance as it relates to sign and vehicle for sale requirements.
  • General knowledge of Glendale area streets.
  • Good record keeping and reporting skills
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and fair manner

WORKING CONDITIONS: Main duties are performed in the field using a City of Glendale vehicle. A cell phone, digital camera, and other tools will be provided, as necessary to perform assigned tasks. Training will be provided by City of Glendale Code Compliance staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED, previous code compliance experience helpful

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid Arizona Driver’s license


Homeland Security/Emergency Management Operation Center

New: Non paid volunteer opportunity available in Homeland Security. Seeking volunteers with computer skills, verbal and written communication skills, flexible hours, must pass fingerprinting and background checks. Office/Admin assistant working in EOC operations. Duties to include: Projects, research, writing, typing.

On-Call Sporadic General Office Support

We have a need for people who would be interested in volunteering on an on-call basis. Occasionally departments need additional help due to being temporarily short-staffed, for large bulk mailings or for projects requiring a few extra hands. This would provide an exposure to several different departments and an opportunity for an overall view of the workings of the City. You would be placed on a list and contacted when a need arose. After receiving information about dates and times, it would be your decision to accept or reject the assignment. The decision would always be yours. Survey Aide - Transportation Department

POSITION SUMMARY:
To provide support to the Transportation Department staff in the areas of conducting fixed route bus survey to meet Federal Compliance guidelines.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Conducts survey on fixed bus (GUS) routes. Survey Aide would track passenger, mileage, and fare counts .Proofs and checks survey data , forms and material for accuracy and completeness. Special projects as determined by staff.

TIME COMMITMENT:
Survey’s are done on random days Sunday thru Saturday, but are usually only two to three days a week. 10-15 hours per week

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Basic math
Attention to detail, good organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Must ride fixed route (GUS) Buses

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum age (16) and or older
Availability both  Weekdays and Weekends

Utilities

Our Utilities department is currently accepting applications for volunteer and intern positions working in the water treatment and wastewater areas.  ADEQ Certification is required for these positions.  If you are currently in a Water Technologies Program with one of the community colleges, this is an opportunity to gain some on-the-job training and possibly college credit.  Please contact Sylvia Charters for more information at (623) 930-2297 or scharters@glendaleaz.com.

PLANT OPERATOR 1 - UTILITIES

JOB SUMMARY:
Assists an Operator or Maintenance personnel in the basic duties of operating and maintaining a water or wastewater treatment plant and related treatment facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Lab testing, data entry, and other utility operator duties, e.g. general plant maintenance, and cleaning, performing inventories, flushing lines, special projects

TIME COMMITMENT:
4 hours/day, 3-5 days/week

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Basic knowledge of safe work practices around chemicals, equipment, and electricity.
Basic knowledge of computers and data bases.
Basic knowledge of water or wastewater treatment is most desirable.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Outdoor work, hazardous chemicals, plant equipment with moving parts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school degree.
ADEQ Water and/or Wastewater Operator I certificate is most desirable.



Xeriscape Demonstration Botanical Garden

The Water Conservation Office is currently seeking docents to assist with educational programs at the award-winning Glendale Xeriscape Demonstration Botanical Garden.  Located at the Main Library, the garden showcases hundreds of low-water-use plants and attracts thousands of people from all over the valley every year.  Docents will be instrumental in providing tours of the garden for schools and special-interest groups.  Special assistance will be needed in January and February 2006 for docents to work with an artist and youth involved in the “Art in the Garden” project.  This innovative project will incorporate art and water conservation to create permanent artwork in the garden.  Become a Friend of the Garden (F.O.G.) docent today!  No experience is needed and free training and workshops will be available to all docents.

The Water Conservation Office also organizes a group workday in the garden one Saturday per month.  The group workdays are a great way to get to know the other volunteers and to become familiar with the workings of the garden.
