About the Glendale Centerline Project ASU Partnership

Young minds will help shape the new Glendale Corridor

Arizona State University’s (ASU) Phoenix Urban Research Laboratory (PURL) and the School of Planning have partnered with the City of Glendale to identify innovative ideas to redevelop the Glendale Avenue Corridor.

The Glendale Centerline Project is a collaborative effort that will draw fresh viewpoints from 19 ASU planning students about development and enhancement opportunities in downtown Glendale. The Glendale Centerline identified area is located between 43rd to 67th avenues from Myrtle Avenue to Ocotillo Road.

Students are very excited about working with the City Council, community members and city staff in a “real life” planning project. Through site visits, data gathering and public involvement activities students will examine the Glendale Avenue Corridor and its surrounding neighborhoods in depth. They will study issues of land use, economic development, housing, mixed use development, transportation projections, parking, zoning, arts, open space and planning for neighborhood preservation and change in downtown Glendale. Students will be incorporating case studies from redeveloped downtowns throughout the U.S. and from around the world and results from these studies will be discussed in a community workshop to get public feedback and input.

Development options and possibilities will be finalized and presented to the City Council in mid-November. The ASU and the city of Glendale partnership will continue through the Spring of 2009. Through the partnership and involvement with these two ASU courses, the city of Glendale will receive another perspective on for the valued future of the Glendale Corridor.

ASU Planning Studio Centerline Report

The ASU Introductory Urban Planning Studio assisted in the first phase of Glendale’s Centerline project. The students gathered data, conducted research, analyzed the area and interacted with the public. Based on their findings and what they learned through case studies, citizen comments and literature, students developed recommendations and possibilities for the area.  The Centerline Report they developed is an overview of their work, findings and recommendations. While an important and valuable planning document, it is not the city’s official or final Centerline Redevelopment Plan, it is just one piece of the puzzle as we continue to gather data and input from our stakeholders.  We would love to hear what you think about the ASU Centerline Report – send your comments to centerline@glendaleaz.com.
