Firefighter Trainee Recruitment Process Extension

Thank you for your interest in the City of Glendale Firefighter Trainee position. The Glendale Fire Department Firefighter Trainee recruitment process has concluded with all available applications being handed out on Monday, April 14th. at 9:00 a.m. The following information explains the steps for returning the application if you received one. Only those receiving application packets on April 14th, at Jobing.com Arena, 9400 W. Maryland Ave. Glendale, Avenue 85305, parking lot “X”, will be able to return application packets by the extension deadline date listed below. If you submit more than one application packet, only the first one will be considered. All information is contained within this notice, no phone calls please. This information is subject to change.

City of Glendale - 2008 Firefighter Trainee Recruitment Process

FIREFIGHTER TRAINEE

SALARY:   $38,215 - $56,461 annually

Minimum Qualifications for Glendale Firefighter Trainee:
Must be 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or a GED by application closing date.  Must have passed a Candidates Physical Ability Test (CPAT) from a Glendale-recognized organization in the past six months, to be hired.  Must have a valid Arizona Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic certification, reside in Arizona and possess a valid Arizona driver’s license by date of employment.  A full job description for Firefighter including special requirements is available at the city web page at www.glendaleaz.com.

  • Completed application packets, received from April 14, 2008 distribution date only, will be accepted on or before the closing date.
    Location:     The City of Glendale Human Resources and Risk Management Department
                           5850 W. Glendale Avenue
                           Glendale, Arizona 85301
    Business hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    Closing Date:  Friday, April 25, 2008 at 5:00pm.
  • Only an original application packet will be accepted. Duplicated packet materials will not be accepted. Please practice on another sheet of paper prior to using your numbered originals.
  • Please note the application packet drop off location is different from the pickup location.  No application packets will be accepted at locations other than the one listed above. Faxes and electronic submission will NOT be accepted.

Process Information

  • The information you provide on the questionnaire supplement sheet and the application will be used to determine your qualifications and eligibility for the oral board process. 
  • If you are selected to proceed in the Oral Board process you will be notified by mail within three weeks of the closing of the application process.  Do not contact the Fire Department, Human Resources or fire personnel to check on your status. 
  • Those who pass the entire process will be placed on a list, and this list will remain in effect until the next recruitment process.
  • The number of applicants that are hired will be determined by department position availability and current budget.

Change of Contact Information: You are responsible for updating any information you have provided during the recruitment process. If your contact information changes, please notify the City of Glendale Human Resources and Risk Management Department by e-mail.  We are not responsible for lost or misdirected mail.

Oral Board:  By invitation only – Estimated to begin around May 12th and continue to the end of the month depending on the number of persons interviewed. All dates are subject to change.

Other Elements

  • This process is contingent upon the successful completion of a background investigation, drug screen and a medical examination after a conditional offer of employment is made. 
  • Those individuals selected for employment by the Glendale Fire Department will be scheduled for training at the Glendale Regional Training Facility.

SELECTION PROCESSApplicants whose training, education and experience most closely meet the needs of the position may be invited to participate in the selection process. Human Resources reserves the right to terminate or extend the life of an eligibility list at any time. The hiring department will contact those candidates they wish to test and/or interview. All candidates are subject to an extensive background check, including but not limited to, Department of Public Safety and FBI background investigations. Applicants must be truthful and accurate and avoid providing inconsistent information, incorrect dates, partial or incomplete information when completing the application and any supplemental forms. Falsifying or omitting information during any stage of the selection process, may make you ineligible for consideration or continued City employment.

PREFERENCE POINTS:  If you are eligible for Employment Preference Points under Arizona Revised Statute 38-492, please complete an Employment Preference Point Form, available in Human Resources, and submit with your application.

Job Specifications

Employment Standards

For Firefighter Trainee minimun requirements

  • Minimum Age of 18 years by application end date. 
  • Arizona residency at the time of appointment of hire
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. by application end date. 
  • Arizona Emergency Medical Technician certification at time of hire
  • Must successfully pass the conditional hiring process, which includes a background check, drug testing and a medical physical administered by a fire department physician. 
  • Must successfully complete 12-week firefighter training academy
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as a commitment to serve others

Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)

Glendale Fire Department requires that all firefighter recruits have passed a Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) within 6 months of hire date.  Currently Glendale Fire Department does not host a CPAT.  Interested applicants are encouraged to enroll in a local CPAT process. 

If you have never taken a CPAT, need to renew because your last CPAT was longer than 6 months ago or need to retake a CPAT due to failure: Glendale Fire Department encourages applicants to sign-up for GCC’s CPAT. 

Applicants can contact Glendale Community College at (623) 845-3439 with questions concerning GCC’s CPAT.  Applicants can also go on-line to www.gc.maricopa.edu/fsc/advisement_registration.htm for downloadable CPAT forms.

OUT-OF-STATE APPLICANTS:  Glendale Fire Department only recognizes CPAT’s from agencies in the Phoenix Metropolitan area.  This would include area fire departments or through the Maricopa County Community College District.
