Glendale Fire To Acknowledge Two “Little Heroes”
The Glendale Fire Department will acknowledge two 1st grade students for their quick thinking in emergency situations. The two students, both attending Community Church of Joy Elementary School, will receive ‘Little Hero’ certificates from Glendale Fire Chief Mark Burdick on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at the Community Church of Joy Elementary School, located at 21000 N. 75th Avenue. The presentation will take place at 2pm.
The first award goes to Kyler Marth, 1st grade. Kyler called 911 while his Grandmother was having a suspected stroke. Kyler was able to give the 911 operator the information needed to save his Grandmother’s life.
The second award given will be to Hannah Anderson, 1st grade. Hannah and her 3 year old neighbor were being watched by their mothers while swimming. Hannah was in the pool when 3 year old Mikey jumped in the pool causing his floaties to slip off of his arms. Immediately Hannah swam under water to Mikey and reached around his body and brought him to the edge of the pool as both moms were eagerly waiting to pull their children out of the pool.
The Community Church of Joy has a Glendale Firefighter ‘Fire Pal’ assigned to the school. Fire Pal Matt Bender visits the school periodically throughout the course of the school year and teaches fire and life safety lessons to grades K-3. In total 40 Glendale Schools have fire pals assigned to them. On average, 6,500 students per month are taught various safety lessons which include; Friendly Firefighter and 9-11, Stop-Drop-Roll, Smoke Detectors and Crawl Low in Smoke, Home Escape Plans, Water Safety and several other topics.
