Operation Prom and Beyond
In Arizona 952 car collisions resulted in a fatal injury in 2007. Persons aged 15-19 accounted for over 10% of all people killed in motor vehicle collisions in Arizona during 2007. In 2008 there were 13 fatal traffic collisions in Glendale. Of those fatalities, 23% were alcohol related, 30% were drug related and 30% were speed related. |
Glendale Fire and Police Departments gave Independence high school students a firsthand look of the dangers of driving while under the influence. “The goal is to encourage students to use their best judgment before driving or getting into a vehicle that is driven by an impaired driver” said Glendale Firefighter Daniel Valenzuela. Students gathered in the football field bleachers while firefighters and police officers worked a “mock-collision” with damaged vehicles and several patients. In this scenario, Glendale Firefighters treated patients (student actors) while the Glendale Police Officers investigated the collision and made an arrest.
Glendale Fire and Police gave a step-by-step description of the action using loud speakers to keep the crowd informed. Students also heard from Mr. Sam Risha, a father of a victim in an actual case. Mr. Risha’s comments, in my opinion, possibly made the most impact of the presentation. Independence High School’s Prom will take place on May 9nd. |
