First walk out to your water meter, typically located in front yard of a single- family residence. Remove the meter box lid to gain access to your water meter. You can check for a leak by observing the leak indicator and/or the sweep-hand in as little as five (5) minutes. The leak indicator is the small red triangle located on the face of the register and the sweep-hand looks like the hand on a clock, those two items will show water usage even on a minor leak. In order to gauge a single gallon of usage the red sweep hand may be utilized. Notate the location of the sweep-hand, this will help you gauge each gallon that has past through the meter during the test. If the sweep-hand has not moved and the leak indicator (red triangle) does not move this would be an indication of no leak. A small leak may take much longer to significantly show a difference on your meter. Therefore, you should perform a longer test if the first test shows no leaks. Do not use any water in your home for one to two hours. Document the reading on your water meter register prior to the test using all the dials on the register. After the specified amount of time has lapsed, remove the meter box lid and write down the current reading. If the meter reading has changed, this would indicate a leak on your side of the meter.
