An appeal is a legal process in which a higher court (Maricopa County Superior Court) reviews the decision of a lower court (Glendale City Court) based on the audio record of your hearing. An appeal is not a retrial of your case, and you cannot present new evidence or testimony. You are responsible for all appeal charges/fees. You may appeal civil traffic findings, criminal rulings and civil orders.

• Civil Traffic - You have the right to appeal a final decision of a civil traffic matter in this court by filing a Notice of Appeal within 14 calendar days of the judgment of responsible. You are not required to pay the fine or post the bond to exercise your right to appeal. However, if you choose not to pay the fine or post the bond on the day the final judgment is entered or make arrangements to pay with the court, the court will enter a default judgment against you and additional fees will be assessed.
• Criminal - You have the right to appeal a final decision of a criminal matter in this court by filing a Notice of Appeal within 14 calendar days of the judgment of guilty. You are not required to pay the fine or post the bond to exercise your right to appeal.

How do I post bail?

Bail (bond) may be posted in person at Glendale City Court (5711 W. Glendale Avenue) during court hours, and after court hours bail may be posted at Police Detention (6835 N. 57th Drive). When can warrants be issued?

There are several different times in criminal cases when warrants can be issued by Glendale City Court:

• at the beginning of a case
• during a case if a defendant fails to appear
• after adjudication when a defendant fails to comply with the sentence

Criminal arrest warrants can be issued when there is reasonable cause to suspect an individual of a misdemeanor crime. Arrests result in being held in jail until a bond is paid or until the defendant is brought to the Court from the jail to see a judge. The judge will decide if bond should be continued or if the defendant can be released on his own recognizance.

When a person fails to appear for a scheduled court date, a warrant is issued. The defendant may be arrested. The defendant must post a bond and another court date will be set. If a defendant knows ahead of time that he cannot attend court at the scheduled time, he should request a continuance. He must appear unless the continuance is granted by a judge. If a person misses their court date, they should appear as soon as possible in court to ask the judge to quash the warrant and to reset the court date. The judge decides whether to require bond.

A warrant will be issued if a person is required to pay a fine or to complete a sentence and fails to do so. If a fine has been imposed and the defendant is arrested, he must pay the fine in cash, plus any fees. If this is not possible, the person will be brought to the court for the judge to decide to hold the person in contempt or release them to pay.

If a person has been placed on probation, and has violated probation, or has failed to appear for a review hearing date, a probation violation warrant will be issued. In addition, the prosecutor may file a petition to revoke probation.

In any situation where a warrant is outstanding, a person may appear at a walk-in time to see the judge. Walk-ins are from 8:30 a.m.-noon, and 1:30 –5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Street parking is available on 57th Avenue south of Glendale Avenue or in the public parking garage on the west side of 57th Avenue.

What are subpoenas?

Subpoenas are orders to give testimony in court and are issued by the Glendale City Court. Parties may subpoena individuals by completing the subpoena form at the court. Parties are responsible for completing the forms and having the subpoenas served on the person who is to appear in court and testify.

There is a warrant out for my arrest, what do I do?

Appear in court as soon as possible during business hours to see a Judge. If you appear in person, you should be prepared to post some or all of the bond. During non-business hours, bonds can be paid at Glendale Detention located at 6835 N. 57th Drive. To post bond by phone or for more information call (623) 930-2427.

Can I get a marriage license from Glendale City Court?

Can I go to defensive driving school for an Arizona citation if I live out of state?

What victim services are available?

Victim Services are available through the city prosecutor’s office, (623) 930-3323, and the police department, (623) 930-3030.

A Victim Service advocate is available through the victim's assistance unit to assist victims of misdemeanor crimes that occur within Glendale city limits. An advocate is available to explain the judicial system; act as a link between the prosecutor and the victim; give current case status information; assist in obtaining orders of protection; make referrals for counseling, food, shelter and the like; and escort victims while they testify or appear at hearings.

How do I handle divorce, child custody and support payments?

Glendale City Court does not have jurisdiction over cases involving divorce, child custody or child support. Such cases are filed in Maricopa County Superior Court. How do I get a continuance for defensive driving school?

For one continuance to complete the defensive driving school, you can call the court at (623) 930-2400 prior to your court date.

How should I dress for court?

Casual business attire is appropriate for most court appearances. Tank tops or shorts are not appropriate for courtroom proceedings. Clothing with visible offensive wording is not permitted.

I went to defensive driving school, now what happens?

When you complete the class at one of the schools listed on the brochure given to you by the police officer, the school notifies the court and the charge is dismissed on your record. For further questions, call the Court at (623) 930-2400.

Where can I take a class to learn more about child restaint in vehicles?

Children Are Priceless Passengers (CAPP) is a voluntary program available to persons cited for a violation of A.R.S. 28-907A (Child Restraint Law). Upon completion of the class and presentation of the certificate, the fine will be reduced to zero. Some attendees may obtain a new child safety seat during the class.

Classes are two hours in length and offered in both English and Spanish. A class fee of $25 is required, pre-registration is required, and only cash or money order payment will be accepted. Daycare is not provided, and children are not permitted at the classes.
