News
Code Compliance implemented a proactive system of conducting inspections in neighborhoods. The system provides for inspectors to travel down each city street to check for code violations and address them. With the new system in place, the need for residents to file complaints is diminished. However, effective March 11, 2024, Code Compliance will continue to accept complaints with these guidelines:
  • Maximum of two (2) complaints per household in a calendar week
  • Any complaints exceeding two (2) will not be entered or stored
  • Complaints must be on a property within one (1) mile of the complainant's residence or business
  • Exceptions to the maximum include health and safety hazards such as an accessible swimming pool at an abandoned property or an open refrigerator in a front yard

Code Compliance wins "Code Enforcement
Department of the Year" Award 2021

The City of Glendale's Code Compliance Division has been named "Code Enforcement Department of the Year".  The American Association of Code Enforcement held their annual conference in Glendale last week and announced it at their luncheon on Thursday, October 21st.

While COVID-19 disrupted service in many industries, Glendale Code quickly adjusted service delivery methods prior to government mandates to maintain the high level of community expectations and keep Glendale one of the cleanest cities in the country. Code Compliance resolved 8,376 cases and abated 51 properties in the last year.  This team is consistently seeking methods to improve performance, increase communication with customers, and meet the needs of the Glendale residents.

Glendale Code Compliance Team Wins National Award

The City of Glendale Code Compliance Team was recognized in October for outstanding achievement in the Community Service Category at the American Association of Code Enforcement 2019 Annual Conference in Bloomington, Minnesota.

The team developed several partnerships to provide assistance to the elderly, disabled individuals, and veterans that had code violations on their property. Assistance was provided to help the individuals correct the violations, add landscaping, and remove dead trees and vegetation. Senior Inspector Manny Molina (pictured with the award) led the efforts and accepted the award on behalf of the Division.

Mission

To maintain established community standards that preserve and promote the health, safety and living environment of our community and neighborhoods.

About Us

Code Compliance is responsible for ensuring compliance with city codes and ordinances.

We ensure compliance with codes that generally pertain to vacant land and existing structures.  The codes include regulations that apply to building, fire, general nuisance, health and safety, property maintenance, rental property and zoning.

Our department has primary enforcement responsibility for numerous city codes but also works in partnership with various departments to ensure both residents and businesses are in compliance with city code regulations.  Some of the typical cases opened are overgrown grass/weeds, trash and debris, parking on the front yard, and items stored in public view.  Our division resolved 10,237 cases during the 2020 Fiscal Year.

Inspection Process

Code violation cases can be created by calling our office or by submitting an online concern. Some cases are opened proactively by the inspector.

Once a case is opened a code inspector will complete an initial inspection of the property within 3 business days. Please keep in mind this is contingent on the code inspector’s scheduled days off and holidays.

At the time of the initial inspection (visit to the property), the code inspector will determine if the property is in violation. If a violation is observed, appropriate enforcement action will be taken on the property.

Upon reinspection, the inspector may extend the timeframe for completion or issue a citation and begin the court process if necessary. Click here for more information regarding proactive inspections.

Saturday Inspections

Code Compliance inspectors perform inspections on Saturdays. Staff check the call-in line, 623-930-3610, throughout the day for complaints of violations that occur primarily on the weekends such as continuous/excessive yard sales, parking on the front yard and running a business in a residential neighborhood. Be sure to leave your contact information so an inspector can follow-up with you once an inspection is completed.
